go to school =泛指去某地；to school 是介词短语，做地点状语

go home =泛指回家；此处home是地点副词；

1.它们之间的区别在于：介词短语做地点状语与副词作地点状语的区别。

2.但是home 有名词词性；upstairs没有名词的词性。副词前面是不能用the的。
