只有一个音节的单词叫单音节单词，例如：me, book, bike, desk, fly, I, 等等。

两个音节的单词叫双音节单词，如：apple, butter, couple, delight, flower, classmate,等等。

三个或三个以上音节的单词叫多音节单词，如：butterfly, exercise, basketball, carefully, beautiful, interesting, wonderful, 等等。
